Vastu Principles for keeping Trees and Plants

Keeping green plants brings prosperity and happiness in our lives. But if we don’t follow Vastu principles in keeping them in the right direction it may bring some adverse effects in our lives. Here are some basic Vastu principles that we should follow to bring prosperity and good luck:

  • Avoid thorny or milking plants as these are inauspicious.
  • Flower pots should not be kept on the east, north or northeast wall of the building.
  • Peepal or Fig or Banyan trees are sacred trees so shouldn’t be kept at home. These plants should be placed only in temples.
  • Holy Basil or Tulsi (Botanical name- Ocimum sanctum) is very auspicious and should be kept in North, East or Northeast direction
  • Bamboo (Dracaena braunii) is an indicator of luck and peace and it brings fame and wealth.
  • Money plant (Botanical Name- Epipremnum aureum) is an indicator of wealth and income and should be kept in North or East direction
  • Ashoka tree (Saraca indica) is an indicator of joy and it’s a ‘Sanskrit’ word which means without grief. It should be kept outside the house to remove grief and sadness.
  • Banana Tree (Musa genus) is considered to be very auspicious and it is worshipped on Thursday along with praying to Lord Vishnu. It should be kept in North East of the house for good health and mental peace.
  • Tall trees should be planted in Southwest direction for better stability.
  • Do not cut any plant or tree in the month of Magh or Bhadrapad.
  • It is believed that evil spirits dwell in the Tamarind/Imli (Tamarindus indica) and Myrtle tree (Genus Lagerstroemia). So avoid building or buying any house near these trees.
  • Never keep dried or dead plants and flowers as they bring negativity to your house. Do not place plants or trees in the center or extreme front of your house as doing so will obstruct the flow of energy.
  • Small plants or trees can be grown in North or East, but avoid them from North East area. In North East corner you should avoid any plant or tree except Holi Tulsi (Basil)
  • Do not place any bonsai plant as they represent short/ little growth.

According to Vastu Shastra, the way in which our home affects every part of our lives, the same way the choice of plants kept in our house has certain positive and negative impact on our lives. Sometimes, unknowingly, we keep those plants in our house that generate Vastu Dosha impacting our life.

  1. According to Vastu Shastra, thorny plants and those plants, which after getting cut or chipped leak milk like fluid should never be kept at home. These plants generate negative energy. However, thorny plants like roses can be kept at home provided they are placed in balcony or terrace.

  3. Bamboo shoots can also be used for decoration in your house. According to Feng Shui bamboo plants are a symbol of happiness and prosperity.
  4. For positive energy to always float around you, change the old flowers in your vase with the new ones everyday at home or at workplace. 
  5. Avoid keeping any kind of plants in your bedroom. This may hamper your married life. 
  6. Flowerpots can be kept in drawing and dining rooms of your house.
  7. Rose and Jasmine are good plants and should be kept at home. These plants relieve one from metal stress. 
  8. Tulsi Plant is sacred and auspicious. It is also rich in medicinal properties and even reduces pollution. This plant should be kept in the Brahma sthal of your house. 
  9. Artificial plants should not be kept at home. They are considered unlucky in aesthetic sense. They tend to attract excess sunlight and stench too.
